A practical guide to picking a UK marina that fits how you sail, what you sail, and where you sail it — covering cost, access, facilities, and community.

Choosing a marina is the most consequential decision a UK boat owner makes after the boat itself. It shapes how often you go sailing, what kind of sailing you do, and how much it costs you to do it. Get it right and the boat is in the water and you're aboard most weekends. Get it wrong and the boat becomes a ferry-ride away in a marina with the wrong sailing programme, the wrong tide times, and fees you resent every January.

This guide walks through the four factors that matter most — cost, access, facilities, community — and ends with a practical evaluation framework you can apply to any marina on your shortlist.

Why marina choice matters more than you think

A marina isn't just a parking space for your boat. It's the hub of a small community, the gatekeeper to your sailing waters, and a substantial annual cost. The same boat berthed in two different marinas can produce radically different sailing lives.

Consider two owners with identical 32-foot cruising yachts. One berths on the Solent at a marina with a packed Saturday racing programme and easy Channel access. The other berths in a quiet West Country river with two-hour tidal gates and a strong cruising-and-passage-making culture. Same boat, very different sailing.

Most owners assume cost is the dominant factor. It isn't. The dominant factor is whether the marina's character matches how you actually want to spend your weekends.

Cost: the real numbers

UK marina annual berthing fees vary roughly four-fold across the country. A 10-metre boat on a major Solent marina pays substantially more per year than the same boat on the Welsh coast, the Forth, or the Thames Estuary. The headline rate is only the start.

Look at the total annual cost:

  • Annual berthing fee
  • Visitor or short-stay surcharge if your boat is in someone else's berth
  • Liveaboard fees if applicable
  • Parking and electricity charges
  • Lift-outs and antifouling space (often charged extra)
  • Winter storage if you don't keep it afloat

A "cheaper" marina that charges 30% less for the berth but forces you to lift out for winter and pay separately for hardstanding may end up costing you more annually. A more expensive marina with afloat winter berthing and free access to a slipway may be cheaper net.

Ask each marina for a written annual cost summary that itemises every recurring fee. The good ones provide it without prompting.

Access: tides, locks, and timing

Tidal access is the second-biggest determinant of how often you sail. A marina with deep-water access at all states of tide gives you total flexibility — you can leave at 3am or arrive at 11pm. A drying berth or one inside a tidal sill restricts you to a window each side of high water, sometimes only a few hours per tide.

For some sailing styles this matters less. If you're a one-trip-a-month cruiser, planning around a tide gate is no hardship. If you race or weekend-cruise frequently, two-hour gates compound and you'll lose entire weekends to tidal misalignment.

Questions to ask before signing:

  • What's the minimum draft accessible at low water springs?
  • Are there locks or sills, and what hours do they operate?
  • Is there free passage 24/7, or are there access restrictions?
  • How long is the typical wait at the lock or sill?
  • What's the harbour speed limit and route through any commercial traffic?

For Solent and South Coast sailors, fully tidal access is normal. For the Thames, parts of the East Coast, and many West Country marinas, expect some form of gate. Neither is wrong — just match it to your sailing style.

Facilities: what you actually use

Marinas advertise long facility lists. Most owners use four or five of them. Be honest about what you'll actually need:

  • Fuel berth — essential for cruising, especially for diesel and for the rare petrol outboard
  • Water and shore power on every berth — non-negotiable for liveaboards, very nice for everyone
  • Showers and toilets — quality varies enormously; visit and check
  • Chandlery on site — saves a drive when you've broken something at 5pm on a Friday
  • Boatyard and lift facilities — affects winter storage costs and emergency lift-outs
  • Engineer, electrician, sailmaker on site or nearby — when you need them, you need them

Less essential but useful: gym, restaurant, reception staffed at weekends, secure car park, dog-friendly policy, decent broadband.

What's nearly useless in practice: marketing-favourite "branded experiences", overpriced cafés, and pretentious guest-only zones. They sound good in brochures but rarely change how you sail.

Community: the underrated factor

This is the factor that owners only appreciate after they've changed marinas. Two marinas with identical fees and identical facilities can have completely different cultures.

A marina with an active sailing club hosts regular racing, runs cruising rallies, organises winter talks and training, and has dock-side conversations every Friday evening. A marina with no club is a parking lot — friendly enough, but you'll never meet anyone, never hear about a passage opportunity, never get an extra hand to help you off a windward berth.

For first-time owners, a marina with an active sailing community is worth a 10–15% premium on annual fees. The learning rate alone justifies it. You'll watch how other people rig, dock, and sail, and you'll have someone to ask when something on your boat is doing something it shouldn't.

For long-time sailors with their own crew network, this matters less.

A practical evaluation framework

When you have a shortlist of two or three marinas, do this:

  1. Visit each at the weekend. Saturday morning at 10am tells you more than any brochure. How many boats are out? How many people are working on their boats? What does the dock-side conversation feel like? Is the office staffed?

  2. Ask for a tour. Walk the pontoons. Check fender condition, cleat security, shore-power posts, water taps. A marina that maintains its own infrastructure tells you everything about how it'll treat your boat.

  3. Ask three current berth-holders. Not the ones the marina office introduces you to — pick boats yourself. Ask: what's the worst thing about being here? Owners who like their marina will give you a fair answer; owners who don't will tell you exactly what to avoid.

  4. Check the sailing programme. Is there racing? Cruising rallies? Training? Talks? An active programme tells you the marina is a place where sailing happens, not just where boats live.

  5. Read the contract carefully. Notice periods, fee escalation clauses, lift-out obligations, insurance requirements, restrictions on subletting or selling. The contract terms tell you whether the marina is on your side or not.

Don't optimise for the wrong thing

The most common marina mistake is optimising for a single factor. Cheapest fees but a two-hour drive from home. Best facilities but a tidal sill that locks you in for half the day. Closest to home but no community and limited racing.

The right marina balances all four factors against your specific sailing style. A weekend cruiser, a club racer, a long-distance passage maker, and a liveaboard each want different things from the same marina.

The best test: imagine yourself in five years, looking back at every weekend you didn't sail. What was the reason? If "marina was wrong" comes up, you've got the wrong marina.
